“Most of us find Stoicism when life gets hard. I wondered: what if children learned these lessons before they needed them?”

Aura & the Golden Feather

In the heart of the Eternal City, a boy named Aura finds a golden feather that seems to fill the whole world with color. But when it is snatched away and the colors drain from everything, Aura uncovers a gentle secret the emperor Marcus Aurelius knew long ago.

The magic was never in the feather. It was in his own thoughts all along. A warm first taste of Stoic wisdom for curious young hearts.

About the author

Hi, I'm Spencer Walden

I'm a dad, writer, and the creator of Brave Little Choices, a picture book series about big feelings, calm hearts, and the brave little choices children can make every day.

Honestly, Brave Little Choices started at bedtime. I would read book after book with my kids and quietly wish more of them carried the lessons I actually wanted to pass on. Plenty were sweet, silly, or beautifully drawn, but few of them spoke to the things I cared about most: how to sit with a hard feeling, how to be brave when something feels unfair, how to be kind when it is not easy. I kept looking for those stories, and when I could not find enough of them, I decided to write them.

Like a lot of adults, I came to ideas like perspective, courage, self control, and acceptance later than I wish I had. They were not things I learned when life was easy. They were things I reached for when life felt stressful, uncertain, or bigger than I knew how to handle. That made me wonder: what if children could meet these ideas earlier?

Not as lectures. Not as rules. Not as complicated philosophy. But as gentle stories they could feel, remember, and talk about with the grown ups who love them. Brave Little Choices grew from that question.

These books are written for children with big imaginations and big feelings. Children who are learning what to do when something feels unfair, when plans change, when they feel angry, disappointed, worried, or left out. Each story takes a small piece of ancient wisdom and turns it into a child sized moment: a feather that loses its magic, a thought that changes the color of a day, a choice to pause before reacting.

I do not think children need perfect calm or perfect self control. They need language. They need stories. They need small, memorable ways to understand what is happening inside them, and to see that even when they cannot control everything around them, there is still something brave and kind they can choose next.

I live in Canberra, Australia with my family. Aura & the Golden Feather is the first Brave Little Choices story.
